Council Member Borelli plans to vote “No” on the upcoming speed camera legislation, the Reckless Driver Accountability Ace. He is joined by fellow Staten Island elected Steven Matteo, who will also be voting against the bill.
The Reckless Driver Accountability Act aims to create a three-year pilot program, which will required drivers who receive 15 or more speed camera violations, or 5 or more red like camera violations, inside of a 12-month window to complete a safe driver course offered by the DOT. If the operator does not attend the courses within a predetermined amount of time, the vehicle will be subject and seizure until the course is completed.
“The speed camera program is about punishing car owners and increasing revenue, not about school safety” said Borelli.
