STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Minority Leader of the New York City Council, Joseph Borelli, has announced the kickoff of a NYC cleanup initiative, helping further district-wide cleaning services.
The representative of the South Shore is credited with having committed $570,000 of his discretionary funds towards the removal of graffiti, litter, and overgrowth since 2020. Through local initiatives spearheaded by Borelli, in conjunction with local nonprofit groups like Where to Turn and New York City H2O, the South Shore has continued to see progress in maintaining a clean community.
As a result of litter concerns, Borelli has allocated an additional $130,000 in discretionary funds to bolstering DSNY services including mechanical broom sweeping services and increased basket collection.
“Keeping our area clean is no small task,” said Borelli. “In addition to the hard work of DSNY, we rely on groups like Where to Turn and NYC H2O to help fill the gaps. We are able to let their groups know about problem locations constituents alert us to and have the area cleaned up quickly, sometimes even in the same day.”
Those looking to make a difference and participate in such cleanup efforts need look no further. This month’s cleanup will take place on Saturday, Jan. 28, and run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., targeting the span of Arthur Kill Rd. from Allentown Lane to Kreischer St. Volunteers will partner up with NYC H2O and work together to cleanup the area. Gloves, garbage bags, pickers and hand warmers will be provided to attendees.
